It’s flu season. Alot of people are getting sick. However, many employees are taking advantage of sick days instead of using their vacation time. Due to the abuse by employees, on taking “sick day” to have an extra long weekend, have forced many employers to ask for a doctor’s note. This has caused many doctors spending time writing notes for employers.
According to the Globe and Mail article, Stop asking employees for sick notes, OMA head urges, states that the “Ontario Medical Association, urge employees with the flu to stay home – and their employers not to ask them for sick notes that require a visit to a doctor’s office.”
Also, recently, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has a policy for a doctor’s note from after one day of sickness, which is one of the most stringent policies in Ontario. It has also cut absentee rates. I have worked in the public sector and most collective agreements asks for a doctor’s note after a certain number of consecutive days of being absent.
Do you think employers should ask employees for a doctor’s note for a sick day?
